Winston - The Highgrove Rocking Horse

01/11/2017

Commissioned by Highgrove, this beautiful reproduction FH Ayres rocking horse has been handmade by Stevenson Brothers, a family run business who have been hand-crafting traditional rocking horses for more than 35 years.

Based on the same rocking horse which HRH The Prince of Wales played on as a child, this reproduction has been affectionately named ‘Winston’ in memory of his Grandfather’s - King George VI’s - favourite horse.

Hand-carved from Tulipwood, ‘Winston’ has been finished with hand-painted features, including stippling which has been matched to the same dapple-grey pattern seen on the original. His flowing mane and tail have been made from real horse hair, while his tack has been made from hand- stitched English leather, including a removeable bridle and saddle.

A personal touch has been added to the woollen numnah, which has been made in The Prince of Wales’s racing colours and finished with the Highgrove crest, hand embroidered in delicate gold and silk threads.

Mounted on an oak and pine safety stand, the left runner has been carved with the distinctive Highgrove name and finished with a brass makers plate, which has been numbered and dated. An extra touch of surprise will be found with a secret locking compartment, for treasured childhood keepsakes.

About Stevenson Brothers
Established by twin brothers Marc and Tony Stevenson in 1982, Stevenson Brothers hand-craft traditional rocking horses from their workshop in Kent. Trained by their uncle, James Bosworthwick, a shipwright from Chatham Dockyard, Marc and Tony set out to reignite the nation’s love for rocking horses as an heirloom to be passed down from generation to generation.
